August - Rasa, the Flavor of Life
Dear JOYN Community,
Have you ever noticed how emotions aren't just thoughts, they're physical? A lump in your throat, a tight chest, a clenched jaw, butterflies. tears that seem to well up out of nowhere. Our bodies are constantly speaking to us.
This month, I've been reminded that life isn't meant to feel one way all the time. We experience moments that fill us with excitement and hope, followed by moments that stop us in our tracks. The instinct is often to numb, distract, or move on as quickly as possible. But yoga teaches us something different.
In yogic philosophy, there's the idea of rasa, the full flavor or essence of life. Just as a nourishing meal isn't made from one flavor alone, a meaningful life isn't built from happiness alone. Grief deepens our compassion while fear reveals what matters most. Joy becomes more vibrant because we've known sadness.
The goal isn't to avoid difficult emotions or become consumed by them. It's to allow them to move through us. To feel them, breathe with them, and when we're ready, move with them.
Sometimes healing looks like sitting quietly with what's present. Other times it looks like rolling out your mat, taking a walk, dancing in your kitchen, or simply taking one slow, intentional breath.
If you've been carrying something heavy lately, or maybe something from long ago that still lingers, know that you don't have to rush yourself toward feeling better. Every emotion has its place. Every feeling belongs.
As we move through August, may you give yourself permission to experience the full richness of being human. Not just the joyful moments, but the ones that shape, soften, and strengthen us, too.
